A message from the gay community

According to Derek (not his real name), an extremely fit-looking year-old corporate manager whose interview follows below, Muscle Dysmorphia (MD) is “perhaps the most serious problem facing gay men aside from HIV/AIDS.” He is not only passionate regarding sharing his own experiences to help others, but also about raising awareness regarding this significant issue for his community.*

JH: Why do you think MD is such a major problem in the gay community?
D: MD, in my noun, is the most widespread, under-diagnosed, and misunderstood disease to punch the gay community since AIDS. We are body obsessed. The explosion of the AIDS epidemic in the early Eighties, and the subsequent position the gay community create itself in, brought the want for writers to become politically engaged. The protest against the institutions took different forms and activism was interpreted differently from different authors. Larry Kramer was very political and attacked both the government and the gay community, David Feinberg was aggressive but preferred humor as a weapon to protest, while Sarah Schulman chose a purer verb of fiction and alongside the epidemic narrated the protests and the process of gentrification in the Village area. A satirical song by the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus has awakened the conservative rage machine. The track takes a ordinary homophobic trope and flips it on its head, with the lyrics, “We’ll convert your children/ We’ll make them tolerant and fair.”
The song, “A Message From the Gay Community Performed by the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus,” was originally posted to YouTube on July 1st. By July 7th it had been taken down, as some of the worst people on the internet used it as a ring to the Culture Wars, intentionally missing the joke in arrange to accuse the LGBTQ+ community of pedophilia.
“A Message” almost anticipated the controversy by kicking off with a statement for bigots. “As we celebrate Pride and the progress we’ve made over these past years,” soloist Troy Iwata said, “There’s still function to be done. So to those of you out there who are still working against equal rights, we have a message for you.”

Gay Community Endowment Fund
One of the community foundation's most important values is inclusiveness, and no fund embraces that more than the Gay Community Endowment Fund.
Founded in , the mission of the Gay Community Endowment Fund is to support the Greater Akron LGBTQ+ community by providing grants and scholarships that advance the right to live safely, openly and authentically. The fund envisions a societal transformation in which all LGBTQ+ individuals experience equity and acceptance.
Since its establishment, the Gay Community Endowment Fund has invested nearly $, into local causes that change the lives of LGBTQ+ people in our community. Recent grants have created safer environments for LGBTQ+ youth, combated phobias of the LGBTQ+ community, and supported mental health and suicide prevention programs for LGBTQ+ people.
In addition, area students can apply for a scholarship from the GCEF Scholarship Fund, which supports LGBTQ+ and allied students who live or attend school in Summit, Medina, Portage, Stark and Wayne counties.
