The 20 Best (Healthy) BL Anime on Crunchyroll

The yaoi genre, also known as Boys' Love (BL), has taken off in popularity over the past few years. It's had a cult following since it was first established in the s, but now it's far more out in the open than it's ever been. Popular anime streaming services all have at least some BL anime, and manga can be found in any bookstore shelved beside shōnen and shojo series. With this amount of attention, however, comes a clearer view of the genre's biggest problems.

A lot of BL can be uncomfortable to consume because the relationships too often fetishize predatory, non-consensual, harassing, and even abusive interactions. Popular BL prefer Dakaichi and The Night Beyond the Tricornered Window suffer from this, as well as classics like Junjou Romantica. As a result, many are seeking BL that don't strongly adhere to the common, and often toxic, tropes that dominate the genre. Crunchyroll has a handful of anime that portray a healthier relationship than the BL standard, arranged from lighter shōnen-ai that hint at yaoi content to full-o

Beautiful and heartfelt. It&#;s not realistic in the sense that I reflect this happens to a lot of people, but it is realistic in the sense that gay people are also people who have interests and who grieve and who deal with all the same things straight people do (plus more). And the emotions are very real--or perhaps saying they feel sincere is more accurate? I&#;m not sure how to put it.

There are so many elements to this show, and they are interwoven so that there&#;s always something interesting and dramatic going on even while characters are changing and relationships are shifting and other more subtle things are going on. The MCs aren&#;t really dating, but their intense and almost instant connection is still a significant aspect of the present. They clearly have strong feelings toward each other, but there are a lot of complications keeping their relationship from progressing in a traditional manner (e.g. dating, having sex, making out, etc.).
