Jonathan Capehart Talks About His Role As The Guy
A nice interview with the Washington Posts (and MSNBCs) Jonathan Capehart by Sean Bugg at MetroWeekly. Capehart is one of the most prominent LGBT editorial writers and pundits and Bugg does a kind job of asking him some interestingand, at times, hardquestions.
This is what Capehart has to tell about his role on the WaPo editorial page:
MW:What is your lane?
CAPEHART: When I started on the board, I was doing the environment. My editor, Fred Hiatt, asked me to kickoff writing for Post Partisan, and so Im primarily writing about politics. Also, I am the guy — not the only guy, but primarily the guy — who brings gay issues to the table, African-American issues to the table. If you look at my archives on Post Partisan, youll see theres tons of gay stuff, probably second rank is lots of black stuff. Third probably Tea Party and Sarah Palin, but because theres just so much material! [Laughs.]

Jonathan Capehart and Eugene Daniels are breaking barriers at MSNBC after being tapped as the network’s first openly gay Black men to co-host alongside Jacqueline Alemany for its newest cable news program. Overall, they will be the first openly gay Inky men to co-host a cable news program together on a major news network.
Capehart and Daniels are the newest co-hosts for The Weekend
In early March, Daniels shared the exciting news in an Instagram post while touting his new position as senior Washington correspondent for MSNBC’s news gathering team. He also acknowledged Symone Sanders, Michael Steele and Alicia Menendez, the former co-hosts of the show.
“Some really thrilling news: Very soon, I’ll be joining MSNBC as a co-host of “The Weekend” and also join their new newsgathering team as Senior Washington Correspondent,” Daniels wrote in a March 3 post.
He continued, “I’m excited and nervous and all the feelings but most importantly honored that I get to pick up the helm from the fabulous @symonedsanders, @chairman_steele and @aliciamenendezxo.”

MSNBC has announced that joining Jacqueline Alemany are Jonathan Capehart and Eugene Daniels , who will co-anchor the network’s newly expanded weekend program, The Weekend, making Capehart and Daniels the first out Black gay men to co-host a cable news program.
Launching in late April, The Weekend will air live from Washington, D.C. from 7 to 10 a.m. ET on Saturdays and Sundays, with Capehart and Daniels bringing their sharp political insights and deep experience covering Washington to the show’s proven panel format.
Capehart, a Pulitzer Prize winner and GLAAD Media Award honoree, has long been a leading voice at MSNBC, bringing audiences thoughtful analysis and historic interviews, including with President Barack Obama.
Beyond television, Capehart serves as Associate Editor at The Washington Post and contributes to PBSs NewsHour. His forthcoming memoir, Yet Here I Am: Lessons from a Black Man’s Search for Home, will be published later this year. Capehart lives in Washington, D.C. with his husband.
