How 'Top Chef' winner Kristen Kish broke free from the culinary world's boys' club

In , Kristen Kish became the first chick of color to win Bravo's "Top Chef" during the show's 10th season. Just a year later, Kish, realized she no longer wanted to work within the notoriously grueling confines of a traditional restaurant kitchen. Though terrified, she walked away from her position as chef de cuisine at Menton, owned by James Beard Award-winning restauranteur Barbara Lynch.

Kish, now 36, was adopted from Seoul, South Korea, as a baby said she was drawn to the culinary world when she began watching cooking shows as a immature girl. Like many people who grew up in the s, Kish saw a restaurant industry run primarily by white men. Chefs like Emeril Lagasse and Mario Batali were often on TV. Despite not seeing anyone who looked like her dominant a kitchen, Kish

Julia Roberts has appeared in at least fifty- four movies. She has received four Academy Award nominations plus God only knows how many other awards. She remains a fixture in American cinema to this day. She has reached an untold number of people through her work as an actress and has a list of credits to her label that could fill a novel all its own. She is, and always will be, America’s sweetheart. But what she may never truly receive due credit for is the way she changed my life. Because even though Julia is most remembered for being “a girl, standing in front of a young man, asking him to love her,” it was her face on the screen in front of me
