Optimal Sport takes pride in zero judgment gym culture

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Optimal Sport is a gay-owned gym that has been creating a vibrant and inclusive space for the last two decades and takes pride in zero-judgment gym culture.

The family-friendly community gym is nestled in the heart of the Gayborhood.

Personal trainer and Lead Group Fitness Instructor Dani Iannone says they present a very wide range of classes. With everything from spin, yoga, HIIT, heavy lifters and sports athletes to Silver Sneakers for older people.

Co-founders and married couple Jeff Shablin and Yule Giraldo started out as personal trainers and have grown the business together for the last 20 years.

They also own a second location in Newtown, garnering not only a great sweat but a sense of belonging!

Aside from the classes and standard machines, guests can explore alternative workout techniques. And lots of on-hand help, including a nutritionist.

You can find them at Dilworth Park in Center City every Monday and Tuesday night at 6 p.m. for free Zumba and Cardio boxing classes.

Philadelphia Gay Relocation Guide

Today we’re making a list of the top gyms in the gayborhood. Us gays are obsessed with keeping in tip top shape, so instead of trying out every gym to find your perfect match, I’ll be reviewing each of them for you.

1. First we’re going to start off with the obviously “labeled” gay gym in Philly, the 12th street gym. And it is an amazing place to verb a heart pumping workout in. This gym is separated into different levels. The bottom is the weight room. There are 8 different rooms down there and an amazing selection of equipment. Going back upstairs, you’ll run into the multiple levels of cardio equipment and group fitness rooms. Overall it is a great gym to travel to, not only to fetch a great workout in, but to also socialize with the local gay gym rats in the area.

2. Optimal Gym is located on Juniper st between Chestnut and Walnut. Come to optimal to avoid seeing all of your gay friends at 12th street. Optimal has an extensive collection of weights, cardio equipment, kettle-bells, and group fitness classes.

Homophobia Shut Down 12th Street Gym

If I were to tell you there was a fitness center in the heart of the city that had a swimming pool, racquetball court, basketball court, sauna, sun deck, about ten thousand square feet of gym equipment, and sprawling classrooms for endless free classes, you'd think I was crazy. If I told you it cost about $29 a month, came with two free training sessions, seven individual guest passes, all without the nefarious upsell and membership cancellation practices of corporate gyms, you'd have me committed.

But it did exist, for nearly three decades, and it finally closed its doors because New Philadelphians and Millennials have turned Philadelphia into a hot-bed of pro-corporate snobbery.

From the outside, 12th Street Gym is unassuming. The only thing indicating it's more than a warehouse along the Gayborhood's 12th Street Strip is the stunning mural of LGBT rights activist, Gloria Casarez. Once a gay bathhouse - community code for a den of anonymous sex - the gym had a hard time shaking its former reputation. Many s
