These days, queer movies come in all shapes and styles, from handsomely mounted biopics (Milk) to kid-friendly rom-coms (Love, Simon). Thats a good thing; you want queer art to enjoy variety and novelty, and appeal to all audiences in the LGBTQ community. But sometimes, you want something very specific from a queer film; you want it to be sexy as hell.
When queer movies started bubbling into the mainstream in the early 90s via movies like Philadelphia, they tended to be slightly sanitized, lacking much in the way of physical depictions of intimacy. (In Philadelphia, Hanks lead character famously never kisses his partner.) Thats changed as the years have gone on. Thanks to films enjoy Brokeback Mountain, theres now a ton of modern examples of queer films that arent bashful about their leads getting it on. But theres a longer history of sexy queer cinema that goes back well before the 90s, even if many of those movies were made from independent creators and were little seen.

I’ve always enjoyed romantic movies but it wasn’t until I watched my very first gay romance movie that I truly ‘‘got it’’ and felt all the emotions you were meant to feel when watching a idealistic film.
After years of watching heteronormative films, I could finally relate to the characters and to the gay romantic storylines playing out on screen.
This made me feel so much more invested and emotionally connected to what I was watching, something I am sure every gay person has felt when they hold finally seen themselves portrayed in the media.
In my opinion, gay romance movies are incredibly significant to society. They help normalise and destigmatise loving relationships between same-ex couples.
This in turn plays a part in creating a more accepting and educated society that is less likely to stare or react negatively to seeing a gay couple in public.
