This converted storefront opened as the Screening Room on April 10, with “Sylvia’s Girls” & “Girls-A-Poppin”. It operated for a couple of months then closed down. It reopened on March 2, with “The Vampire Goes Courting” as one of the first theatres in San Francisco that showed hardcore porn. (Numerous other “storefront” theatres would unlocked in the late’s and ’s throughout San Francisco and several other cities.) Initially, the program would consist of 16mm silent loops with a record providing musical accompaniment, but eventually 16mm full-length features would take off.
In , theatre owner Alex DeRenzy exhibited what was the first full-length hard porn feature, a “documentary” called “Pornography in Denmark: A New Approach”. This feature, premiered at his North Beach Movie, before transferring to the Screening Room, where it grossed $25, in its first week in exhibition (It would eventually gross over $2 million). Tea Room Theatre
Located in the aptly named ‘Tenderloin’ district of downtown San Francisco, just off Market Street, this is a miniature storefront type of theatre, of which there were once many in the operating in the area.
The Aquarius Theatre was opened March 28, screening hetrosexual mature person movies. It was advertised in the San Francisco Chronicle in November as the Aquarius Theatre screening straight ‘hardcore’ one hour feature and two hour shorts for $ admission. (New shows every Monday).
On December 4, it was renamed Tea-Room Theatre screening gay male porn movies, later adding live performances to the film program.
Contained within the West Hotel building which has been renovated, the front of the theatre and signage are very smart and decorated in the rainbow colours.
The Tea Room Theatre was closed May 15,
